USF Service Learning Leadership Academy

The University of South Florida has been providing service learning opportunities for years through course-based opportunities for its students. The Service Learning Leadership Academy provides opportunities for students, community members, corporate partners and alumni to receive training and build connections with the Tampa Bay community.

The USF Service Learning Leadership Academy is composed of two elements, monthly forums and community-based action projects. Leadership Development Forums occur monthly to provide hands-on, interactive training and discussion led by community experts and faculty. Forums focus on helping participants gain valuable skills (such as inter-personal, group dynamics and project management) while gaining a greater understanding of the many factors that contribute to community and civic engagement. Community-Based Action Projects are year-long team projects that put learning into practice. Projects are proposed by Hillsborough county nonprofit organizations, USF departments and government organizations. Projects are tangible and capacity building and sustainable in nature. Service Learning Grants

Grants have been awarded to USF faculty members for the service-learning courses they teach over the specified semester. Service Learning is a pedagogy in which students apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life situations occurring in the community. Each course must build our understanding of the strengths or assets of the East Tampa community and be developed in collaboration with an East Tampa community partner.
