Central Avenue Area Community Impact Assessment
Susan Greenbaum, Anthropology and Harold Keller, Education working with the Tampa Housing Authority
Description: Urban redevelopment can bring positive change to blighted neighborhoods, but it can also create hardships for residents. Redevelopment also can threaten historic sites and valued community institutions. The Federal Highway Administration has developed a technique known as Community Impact Assessment (CIA) to determine possible problems in advance of the construction of roadways. We propose to apply this process in determining possible problems that may arise from the planned redevelopment of the Central Park Village section of Tampa.
This proposed research will have results that are directly valuable. It also offers a model for university-community collaborations in measuring impacts of the other types of changes, and informing practical solutions for problems that are identified. This project builds on efforts by the Ad Hoc Committee for Central Avenue Area Impact Assessment (a subcommittee of the Collaborative’s Working Group for Neighborhoods and Communities).
The purpose is to continue the development of Central Park Village and the surrounding area. The partners in this proposal were central figures in the development of a Community Forum that was held on February 19, 2005 at Kid Mason Center. The proposed project will implement the plan of action that was developed at that event.
