Diabetes Education for East Tampa Health Centers

USF College of Nursing students worked with the nursing staff of the Peter Davis Health Center to help provide diabetic education to patients at this East Tampa outpatient clinic.

Description:

Nursing students, Jaime Appell, Mike Armstrong, Philip Brown, Brooke McCullers, Sarah Pancotto, and Morgan Temple, worked with the nursing staff of the Peter Davis Health Center to help provide diabetic education to patients at this East Tampa outpatient clinic. Working in three teams, under the supervision of the clinic staff and Jennifer I. Bonamer, BSN, the students created teaching units on topics of general management of diabetes, diet and nutrition, and foot care, which they presented to the Health Center’s patients and staff.

The students’ three teaching units were then combined by project coordinators Janet DuBois, ARNP, College of Nursing, and Ellen Kent, MPH, Area Health Education Center, to create a comprehensive flip chart on diabetes care. This tool would be used by the clinic staff to educate patients about the care and treatment of their condition. The chart was welcomed by the clinic staff, and will be translated into Spanish so that all patients can benefit. Similar bilingual flip-charts will also be provided to the Lee Davis Health Center and the Cine Domis Health Center in East Tampa. In addition, the project coordinators will create bilingual take-home patient education sheets. Like the flip-charts, the patient education sheets will cover each of the three teaching units in English and Spanish.
