USF Community Design & Research in Downtown Sarasota

Description:

Design work for Downtown Sarasota is just one example of the projects coming out of the USF’s School of Architecture and Community Design.  The research part of the school consists of the University Technology Center II and The Florida Center for Community Design and Research.  Professor Michael Hal?ants and his students answered the “what if” questions created by a proposed new code for Downtown Sarasota.  They planned for a mixed use building on a parcel fronting Sarasota’s Main Street to demonstrate what could be the possible result of the implementation of the new code. The focus of the study centered on the Downtown Core requirements and the consequent affect that it would have on Main Street.

The Center was founded in 1986 as a statewide research center to address urban and regional problems related to both the natural and built environments.  Staff provide design expertise, technical assistance, and applied research to assist Florida’s growing communities. The Center employs faculty and graduate students from 11 different academic disciplines and receives approximately $1 million in contracts and grants annually.
