The Midtown Initiative
The Midtown Initiative is building relationships among USF students, the local neighborhood of Midtown, and USF St. Petersburg.
Description:
The Midtown Initiative began as a hands-on way of promoting the ideals of social and corporate responsibility to business students. Joint efforts by both the City of St. Petersburg and the College are concentrating on improving the five-mile radius neighborhood known as Midtown. Due to the low income levels of residents and the need for economic improvement, assistance to Midtown businesses and organizations can help make their full economic potential become a reality.
In the fall semester of 2004, service-learning courses offered by the USF St. Petersburg’s College of Business introduced students to the Midtown community. Local organizations including Maximo Elementary School, the Boys & Girls Club of St. Petersburg, A Gift for Teaching, and Studio @ 620 have participated in the partnership efforts of the Midtown Initiative. These courses are building relationships among USF students, the Midtown neighborhood, and USF St. Petersburg. The Midtown Initiative is a part of a five-year plan by the USF St. Petersburg’s College of Business to educate, develop, and promote effective and socially responsible managers and professionals.
