Description:
USF Professor Jennifer Baggerly and her play therapy students provided training for both parents and mental health professionals in the Tampa neighborhood of Sulphur Springs last year. Dr. Baggerly's efforts were joined by the USF Harrell Center for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, Sulphur Springs Public Health Clinic, and All Nations Outreach Center. This partnership led to the production of Jump, Jump, a hip-hop song that teaches children about sexual abuse safety. Performed by Dapper Dan, and produced by USF graduate student Debbie Patrick, Jump, Jump appeals to children through a mix of popular songs and rhyming phrases.
Responding to a growing concern regarding child abuse and abduction, Baggerly and Patrick used hip-hop lyrics in an innovative approach to help kids know what to do to prevent violence. The team plans to distribute a CD with this song in many community settings. Through their work in Sulphur Springs, Dr. Baggerly, her students, and community partners have started on the path to making this neighborhood safer for children.
