Kinship Care

Judy Hall, Aaron Smith, and Anne Strozier, Social work/Arts & Sciences

Description: It is estimated that Florida has 375,000 children living with people other than their parents this year because their parents are unable or unwilling to care for them. In many cases, grandparents become the guardians for these children, taking on enormous responsibilities often at advanced age and with little resources. To guide their project, the team created an advisory committee, including representation from grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. They held focus groups, support groups, and created an action agenda calling for better data, more services for guardians, and policies that support grandparents when they become guardians. USF has now established a Kinship Care Center.
