Sexual Abuse Safety and Play Therapy Treatment for Sulphur Springs Children
Jennifer Baggerly, Education and Martha Coulter, Public Health, working with the Florida Department of Health, All Nations Outreach Center, and Sulphur Springs Public Health.
Description: Forty four percent of the 6,308 residents living in the Sulphur Springs area are children, based on the 2000 census. The children are at high risk of sexual abuse, because 62 sexual predators live in the community. Interventions that are appropriate for these children include parent training, play therapy, and health education in order to develop protective and resiliency skills. Through the collaborative efforts of USF’s Counselor Education program and its community partners, filial therapy, parent training to conduct play therapy sessions, and a public health education project will be developed. It is expected that the community can increase safety for the children that live in the area, by increasing community capacity for protecting and nurturing the children and strengthening the children’s mental and public health
