Creating Meaningful Context for Learning through Partnerships
Description:
This project partners USF’s Departments of Childhood Education and Psychological and Social Foundations, the Trinity School for Children (a Hillsborough County Public Charter School) and the surrounding community to investigate the benefits of service-learning for elementary children, college students and teachers. The project will provide service learning for students in the College of Education and facilitate service-learning projects for Trinity third-grade students and staff through the local community through content units on gardening for a retirement home and for a children’s hospital in their neighborhood.
The goal for college personnel is that they will collaborate with teachers to facilitate service learning as a methodology that reinvigorates their teaching and enhances their students’ learning. In addition, both elementary and university students will strengthen their desire to become involved in their communities. Finally, Trinity will provide a site for university courses and will take a leadership role in facilitating service-learning projects within the community
