Promoting Nutrition & Environmental Stewardship through School Gardening in Tampa Bay
Description:
Research has linked participation in school gardens to improvements in children’s learning skills and nutrition as well as strengthening their connections to the environment. Florida has been slow to capitalize on this learning tool, and this study aims to identify barriers to the creation of school gardens and to outline workable solutions as well as profile the best practices for encouraging nutrition and environmental awareness.
The intent of this project is to jump-start school gardening in other Tampa Bay area schools through two workshops for area educators that will demonstrate how to create viable school gardens and integrate them into school curricula. Participants will learn how to create viable school gardens and learn how gardening can contribute to many school subjects, such as health, science, math, art, social studies and language arts. The outcome from these workshops will be shared via the Internet and through published literature.
