Description: Throughout the years, many respected scholars have documented that African-American churches have been important institutions of social support among African-American families. These churches provide one of the most recognizable vehicles in the community to develop networks of services and social supports. Despite this impact of the African-American church, little research has been conducted into understanding how the church improves the well being of families. This project examines services provided by African-American churches for children and families, resources used to provide these services, collaboration with other churches, barriers and strategies to enhance their effectiveness. The identification and assessment of roles played by the church will provide important information and recommendations needed to improve service delivery for African-American children and families.
