2007 Amy Kohlberg Quinlan Internship Program Summary

Seven high school students embarked on a “summer of learning” through the 2007 Amy Kohlberg Quinlan Summer Internship program, sponsored by the USF Collaborative. Since 2004 the Collaborative has hosted this internship program, open to local high school students age 16 and older. The program is funded by a gift from a private foundation in memory of former FMHI staff member Amy Kohlberg Quinlan, a social worker at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute. Winter Issue of Collaborations Quarterly Newsletter Winter, 2005

Six interns representing high schools throughout Hillsborough County were hired this summer to study methods of increasing social capital in our community. Recruited from the secret society known as adolescence, we were able to provide a greater understanding and an alternative perspective on this issue. [read about it-pdf file]

East Tampa Asset Maps

The Collaborative has begun to build stronger community-university relationships by introducing community leaders to faculty and students with similar interests. The Collaborative also offered seed grants for service-learning courses during the spring 2004 term that seek to further USF’s involvement in East Tampa. Together they will begin to build a body of knowledge that highlights the assets and opportunities of this richly diverse neighborhood [read more about it-pdf file].

QUICKR Resource Directory

Professor Richard Briscoe of the Dept of Child and Family Studies, along with professors Robert Nixon of the USF College of Business and Aaron Smith from the USF School of Social Work, have worked with many local partners and stakeholders to develop a valuable resource guide for community members in the Tampa Bay area. The Quality Use of In-Church Known Resources (QUICKR) lists educational and social service supports for children and families provided by African-American Faith-based institutions. Resources such as day care, pre-school, clothes closets, after school tutoring, summer education programs, FCAT/SAT training, elderly care ministry, health fairs, senior citizen support and health education are included.
