USF Receives Commendation from City of Tampa for Work in East Tampa by Judi Jetson [03/21/2009] •On March 12, 2009 the Community Redevelopment Agency Chairperson, Councilmember Tom Scott, presented USF with a Commendation "for many years of providing educational programs, services and volunteers to the families and organizations of several under-served neighborhoods in the City." USF's Graduate Entrepreneurship Program Ranked #5 in the Nation by Barbara Perkins [10/20/2008] •The graduate entrepreneurship program at the University of South Florida has been ranked as the fifth best program in the nation, and is the only Florida public university included in the 2008 ranking compiled by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine. USF’s interdisciplinary program, which is just six years old, is included in the magazine’s October issue ranking the nation’s best educational programs. Summer 2008 Research Internships in Positive Youth Development by Tiffany White [06/10/2008] •In 2003, the USF Collaborative began a summer internship program to involve local teens in gathering information and making recommendations on how communities can create more resilient youth. This internship is made possible through gifts in memory of Amy Kohlberg Quinlan, former faculty member in the Department of Child and Family Studies, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute and a contribution by the USF Honors College. For the second year in a row, the focus of this summer’s 2008 research internship centers on positive youth development in the community.  fullstory

Body Beautiful: Deconstructing Media Messages by Judi Jetson [05/19/2008] •In a project funded by the USF Collaborative Faculty Grant Program, a collaboration among USF’s Department of Special Education, College of Visual and Performing Arts and Carl Sagan Academy, conducted a participatory action research project engage African American girls in examining media messages. Anytown Youth Leadership and Diversity Programs by Judi Jetson [05/19/2008] •Anytown, a residential youth leadership and diversity awareness program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a “Best Practice,” is recruiting Hillsborough and Pinellas 14 - 18 year old high school students to participate in a nationally recognized summer leadership and diversity awareness program hosted by Community Tampa Bay. Anytown also needs volunteers to serve as volunteer-staff for one or more of the sessions.  fullstory

School Gardening Plows Forward in Hillsborough County by Judi Jetson [04/07/2008] •Forty local elementary and middle school teachers met Saturday morning, March 29 at the Learning Gate Community School in Lutz, Florida for hands-on learning in an organic vegetable garden. Ten teachers from Learning Gate led the workshop, in collaboration with a team of researchers from the University of South Florida, in order to make school gardening more accessible for local children.  fullstory

USF students building scenic Riverfront Preserve Pavilion by Judi Jetson [03/10/2008] •Assistant Professor Stan Russell of USF’s School of Architecture and Community Design is overseeing a group of 12 graduate students who designed and are building a pavilion for Temple Terrace’s Riverfront Preserve. It will consist of a covered area for picnic tables, a grassy amphitheater that seats 30, and a curvy information wall along the Hillsborough River. The Design/Build team spent the fall semester designing the pavilion, testing materials, conferring with the client and engineer and preparing construction documents.  fullstory

USF Collaborative Announces its 2008-2009 Faculty Grant Program by Denise O'Brien [02/05/2008] •The USF Collaborative for Children, Families and Communities is soliciting proposals for its annual Faculty Grants for Engaged Scholarship program for 2008-2009. Approximately five to ten grants will receive from $5,000 to $15,000 each for projects lasting up to 12 months. “Bigs” Mentor “Littles” In a Community-Engaged Partnership by Denise O'Brien [01/30/2008] •USF students enrolled in Robin Jones’ Fall ’07 Introduction to Urban Studies class joined forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay to mentor elementary students at Sulphur Springs Elementary School. On December 4, 2007, students shared their semester-long experience in front of an audience of over 50 attendees from various educational and community organizations as well as other University personnel.  fullstory
