Barton has been part of the TheatreUSF faculty since 1982. He holds membership in the I.A.T.S.E. United Scenic Artists 829, Professional Design Union, in Scenic Design and membership in the I.A.T.S.E. Professional Stagehands Union Tampa Bay Local 321. Professionally Barton is very active freelance designer in the Tampa Bay Area. Recent design work has included work with American Stage Company in St. Petersburg and the Shimberg Theatre at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. In addition to freelance design work Barton also works as a professional theatre consultant in conjunction with Dr. Patrick Finelli. As a team, Finelli/Lee Consultants provide expertise as theatre consultants for new and renovated theatre facilities. Finelli/Lee Consultants are currently working on three new construction performance facilities for: Out of Door Academy, Sarasota; Shorecrest Preparatory in St. Petersburg, Florida, University of Tampa; and Tampa Preparatory. Recent completed facilites have included Dixie Hollins High School in St. Petersburg and the Lykes Performing Arts Center at Berkeley Preparatory in Tampa.
At the University of South Florida, Barton serves as Assistant Chair of the Department and Professor of Design, teaching a full-range of design and technology classes. Additionally Barton is active as a scenic and lighting designer and technical director in the department. In the past few years, Barton has spent time in London as an exchange professor with Middlesex University and in a cooperative production project, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with the Greenwich Theatre, England. Additionally, he recently spent a semester studying production techniques and design processes in Prague, Berlin, and London.
